Scopes
What is a scope?
A scope is the collection of objects you want to see data about. Scopes can be created on the fly when adding a tile to a dashboard, or saved to use with further tiles. Once you have defined a scope, it's only available in the workspace you created it in, so you don't clutter up other workspaces with scopes. You can define as many scopes as you want.
Fixed scopes and dynamic scopes
There are two types of scopes:
Fixed scopes contain specific objects that you have manually picked. The objects in a fixed scope never change, except when you manually edit the scope.
Dynamic scopes contain objects that match criteria defined by you. When objects that match those criteria get added to or removed from SquaredUp the number of objects in the scope can change. Tiles that use a dynamic scope will check which objects match the criteria every time they refresh.
A scope can contain a maximum of 500 objects. If your scope contains between 100 to 500 objects, a warning message will advise you that the scope is large, which may impact dashboard performance. If your scope contains 500 or more objects, then the scope will be limited to the first 500 objects in alphabetical order. This hard limit is enforced to ensure that dashboards are able to show visualizations consistently.
When a data source comes with out-of-the-box dashboards, scopes are created automatically when adding the data source. These scopes are always dynamic, with a hard limit set by the data source. You can edit these scopes to make them work in your environment. Doing so will remove the limit set by the data source so you can refine the scope to meet your needs.
How to create a scope
Scopes can be created from a dashboard via the Create new scope page or on the fly via the Objects tab when creating / editing a tile.
Create a scope from a dashboard
In SquaredUp browse to Scopes and then select Add scope.
When you create a new scope, you start with the dynamic scope mode. This makes it easy to find the objects you're looking for, no matter what type of scope you want to create. Select the Data sources the objects you're looking for are coming from, and/or narrow them down to specific types, and/or objects with specific tags.
The preview will show the first 100 objects that match your criteria. Now you can decide if you want to keep the scope dynamic or if you want to select specific objects to create a fixed scope.

If you want to create a fixed scope, switch to fixed scope mode by clicking the button in the lower left corner. Select the objects you want to have in your scope.
Click Next and give your scope a name.
Click Save. Your new scope is now available in the workspace you created the scope in.
Create a scope from a tile
When creating or editing a tile in SquaredUp, browse to the Objects tab.
When you create a new scope, you start with the dynamic scope mode. This makes it easy to find the objects you're looking for, no matter what type of scope you want to create.
Select the Data source or Scope for the objects you're looking for from the Filter section, and/or narrow them down to specific types, and/or objects with specific tags.
The preview will show the first 50 objects that match your criteria. Now you can decide if you want to keep the scope dynamic or if you want to select specific objects to create a fixed scope.
